"2023"
Formula-1, 7 time World Drivers Champion, Lewis Hamilton announced this week that he will be extending his contract with the British F-1 outfit Mercedes. This extension till 2023 will see Hamilton get 2 more chances to overtake Michael Schumacher as the leading World Drivers Champion. With his chances of winning the 2021 title looking slimmer than ever in the Hybrid era Hamilton would not have an opportunity to break Schumachers record unless he re-signed for Mercedes.
The official conformation of the already speculated re-signing was not whole heartedly welcomed by most F-1 fans who are evidently bored of the Hamilton-Mercedes domination since the hybrid era begun. Most fans wanted to see the budding Williams youngster George Russel in the Mercedes seat but with this piece of news one of the seats gets blocked, however Finnish racer Valterri Bottas is not too safe in the second Mercedes seat which could soon be occupied by Russel whose announcement for the same is expected next week at Silverstone for the same.
Coming to the contract details, Hamilton who obviously is now racing mainly to break records has taken a massive pay cut from his previous 1 year deal with Mercedes. The British driver earns approximately $40 million a year as per his current contract with about $2 million per race. However as per his new contract he has taken nearly a $10 million pay cut making his contract valued at $30 million a year.
To some this may seem absurd to a few people - reducing the GOAT's salary - but one must realise that Toto Wolff has enough talent in the Mercedes programme with the likes of George Russel and Esteban Ocon. Hence it was all for Hamilton to lose due to which a pay cut for him was imminent if he wanted to continue with the British Outfit.
It is now all up to Sir Lewis Hamilton to show that even at the age of 36-38 he still has it in him to push and become world champion for an 8th time and maybe even a 9th time.
