The Butterfly Effect
Obviously each one of us has heard of the crazy but yet practical 'Butterfly Effect', proposed by Edward Lorenz. So basically, it refers to when a certain incident takes place which over the course of time possibly alters a timeline. The small or large incident can have the butterfly effect within a short period of time (a few minutes-hours) or even a long period of time ranging over several years.
One such butterfly effect we are explaining today is an incident involving Brighton Forward Neil Maupay, Aston Villa goalie Martinez and how it resulted in Messi winning his first international trophy! Ofcourse concluding with what was it's financial impact.
The Beginning:
On 20th June 2020, just a few weeks after football restarted after the Covid-19 pandemic suspension Brighton hosted Arsenal at the Amex Stadium. During the game Brighton forward Neil Maupay jumped in the box to vie for the ball and injured Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno. This caused a chain of events that caused a lot to happen in world football. The then 28 year old Emiliano Martinez was bought on the pitch as replacement for the game and the rest of the season.
Martinez Masterclass:
The Argentine keeper put in world class performances in the remainder of the season and even contributed to Arsenal winning a controversial FA Cup final against Chelsea. During the summer of 2020/21 he was sold to Aston Villa as he demanded more play time especially after his top notch performances.
Now playing for Villa he kept 16 clean sheets in the PL season and made tremendous saves due to which several fans started to hail him as the best keeper last season. Only Edouard Mendy and Ederson had more clean sheets, but they had much sturdier defences ahead of them.
Argentina Martinez:
After Martinez's stellar 20/21 season he was called up to the Argentine national team for the Copa America. Argentina needed a goalkeeper as Romero was certainly not the best choice going forward. Martinez had a superb Copa America and was the Goalkeeper of the tournament. The biggest part being saving 3 penalties in the semifinal which propelled Argentina to the final where they beat Brazil.
Messi's trophy and its financial imapct:
Lionel Messi finally won his first international trophy after nearly 2 decades of dominating the football world. In a chain of events that began with Neil Maupay and ended with Messi winning his 1st i'ntl trophy there has been a huge impact even on the commercial side.
- Argentina won it's first major trophy since 1990 and earned around $10m.
- Arsenal totally undermined Martinez and sold him to Aston Villa for a mere $14m. Today after his world class season he is valued at about $32m. They could have mined a minimum of $25m from the transfer but due to not recognising his quality they failed to do so.
