4 Finance lessons we learn from MS Dhoni
What does finance exactly mean, you may ask? Finance is a term for the
management, creation, and study of money and investments. It deals with the
questions of how an individual, company or government acquires money – called
capital in the context of a business – and how they spend or invest that money.
From the above we get to know that
finance is a broad term that includes investing, managing, employment,
training, etc. To successfully manage your finances at an individual and
collective level we must have some traits that will benefit us.
In this weeks article, we look at some of these traits one must have with respect to Cricket and Sports icon, MS Dhoni's characteristics.
1) Becoming Calculative in investments :
Any person who is starting to invest, weather he is young or old must be calculative in whatever he does. Background research of the item to be invested in, research about online payment methods and small finance funds or hedge funds (depending on scale of investment) must be studied about.
MS Dhoni was known as one of the most calculative captains in the game who rarely made a tactical error in the game. Very rarely would you hear Dhoni in his post match interviews say that he read the game wrongly. This trait helped him become a great captain which will also apply to all investors, especially new ones.
2) Holding onto something is the key; Loyalty :
'Change is the only constant', is common quote we hear in our daily lives but that is not always the case in investing. Holding an investment for a long period is the key to success, at the same time you must know when to drop the investment. Basically, one must sit with the investment for a long period and allow it develop into its full potential.
MS Dhoni, has also shown signs of this trait year after year in his time as captain of the Indian team as well as CSK. In 2019 and 2020, he pursued using Shane Watson even when he was hitting rock bottom on form and sure enough the Aussie hit form at the right time helping CSK get to the finals. In many previous occasions to he held on to Suresh Raina(Indian team), Dwayne Bravo(CSK), Yuvraj Singh(India - post cancer) and many more players over his 14 odd years of captaincy. All of these players proved doubters wrong and Dhoni's 'investing' right.
3) Stay Calm, be Captain Cool :
Staying calm is the key to success, weather it is in Finance or any other field in life. Staying calm and collected helps you in the long run. When it comes to investing, one must stay calm with his investments. Unless you are an intra-day trader, holding for long will reap higher benefits in majority cases. Even in tense times such as a bear market or in cricketing terms - a crucial innings - if you are alleviated during these times like Dhoni was in every tense situation, you will succeed.
We have seen countless examples of the same from MS Dhoni over the years. Against Pakistan in 2007, Bangladesh in 2016, South Africa in 2011 and of course the World Cup final against Sri Lanka. Stay Calm and reap benefits.
4) A Dip is only a Phase - A Rough Patch
A Financial Weather or a drop in form - both are only short phases. What in important is getting back up and keeping your head up in tough times. The Bull Market and Bear Market both are known as financial weathers which will soon pass and staying invested is the key; and knowing when to cash out and how much to cash out is also a skill which is learnt with experience.
From 2016 to 2018 Dhoni had a terrible patch of form rarely scoring match winning knocks and even showing signs of waning captaincy in the IPL with the Pune franchise. All these were fake signals of the same at the time as we saw a Dhoni 3.0 in 2018 when CSK win the IPL and Dhoni was a crucial part of both, the IPL win and the Indian Team.
