"The Era of Highlights and TikTok"
Almost all of us love sports and watch it for several different reasons. Most watch it for the entertainment, following, love for sports and some even under peer pressure. At the same time some also watch it to escape into a different world for a while be it 90 minutes, 60 minutes or 5 days.
But what if we told you that watching sports is now slowly dipping in viewership and broadcasting. Most children nowadays prefer watching highlights of the game on youtube, some quick moments from TikTok and a few flashy plays of the game from Reels.
In the age of the internet, where no body has time for a certain task and everybody wants to multi task, people are often leaving aside sports. They sit in front of their television or laptop and along with it are busy doing something else while watching. They 'catch up', on the game via highlights some other time or just check the score at the end.
Survey:
To support our argument we conducted a small physical survey where we asked 100 sports fans of different age groups (ranging from 1950-60's upto the 2010's) some questions on this topic.
- Which are the main sports you watch?
- Do you watch all the matches of your favourite club/team/sportsman from the start to the end.?
- Do you base all your knowledge and opinions of the game by the highlights.

Total Number of People in the Survey – 100
*Note – Certain People watch more than 1 sport.
The above stats from the survey conducted by us clearly shows how sports broadcasting is dying. Additionally, one must note that most people who were questioned were of the age group of 14+. Most children below 14 who were questioned preferred highlights over the telecast, which once again proves the point of dying sports broadcasting.
Previous Case Studies of the Same:
There have been a few cases in the recent past where an industry has been completely disrupted in it's working some of them are the music listening, takeaways and movies industries'.
Spotify and Music:
In the case of the music industry people always had to download music from official sites, add it to their devices and then (optionally) transfer it to their pen drives to hear the music in their stereo system. Now we have a drastic change where people have applications and softwares like Spotify, Gaana, YouTube Music, etc. This totally disrupted the music industry. Where earlier any free forms of music were considered pirated and illegal, now they are considered a normality.
Zomato and Takeaways:
Companies such as Zomato, Swiggy and Uber Eats are transforming the way people eat their takeaway meals. Earlier restaurants were able to charge some extra fee on takeaway home deliveries, which is now redundant as Zomato and the others provide delivery inclusive costs for the food at a cheaper rate than restaurants.
Netflix and Movies:
Up until a while back, one could only watch films that were televised on air to air basis or rent out movie casets from DVD rental houses. This came at a certain cost for each caset without even adding the time taken for collecting the caset and then returning it in a stipulated time period. Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc revolutionised this market with their way of allowing you to watch films which has now almost become normality.
The same can also be said for other fields like Kindle and the reading of books.
So what is the future of Sports:
After reading this article this is a question that would pop up in everyone's mind. The answer is simple, it would take the path that the other fields have also taken. What will be it form? When will it completely shift to the new form? and How accessible will it be? These again are questions we cannot know the answer to. Like said earlier, children may prefer watching the highlights from TikTok, Instagram and YouTube however this too cannot be certain of. And as for when we can expect this change, it could be anytime from 1 year to even 10 years.
Only Time will Tell!
If you ask us for our opinion, we still enjoy our sports on television and though we too watch the highlights and flashy moments on Instagram and YouTube, we too would never be able to replace the joy of watching the full game on television.
