"Inflation in Football Transfers"
In today's article we look at 25 amazing transfers that took place in the past and what their price would be today.
We all know about the effect of inflation on football transfers and for that matter of fact, any article or daily commodity. An item or transfer that costed £10m back in 2000 may cost upto £90m+ in 2021. Since the top 5 leagues in the world are all in Europe we will look at only European transfers (Incoming and Outgoing.).
Inflation rates keep changing from year to year, thus we have provided a small table of the approximate rates in Europe over the years. This data has been calculated by a bank named Total Money and has been compiled below (In Random Order).
The List :
25-Ronaldo Nazario: The Brazilian Ronaldo's transfer fee from FC Barcelona to Inter Milan was around £25m which is now worth a staggering £145m.
24- Kaka: 2008 Balon d' Or winner Kaka's transfer from AC Milan to Real Madrid was valued at £60m in the summer of 2009 which was crazy enough at that time and is now worth £140m!
23-Ronaldinho: Our 3rd Brazilian on our list and 2005 Balon d' Or winner, Ronaldinho transferred from PSG to FC Barcelona during the 2003-04 season for a fee of £29m which is now valued at £121m.
22-Alan Shearer: The all time highest Premier League goal scorer transferred from Blackburn Rovers to Newcastle United where he would make his legacy for a mere £18.9m. Well, he would now be valued at £138m.
21-Gianluca Vialli: One of the most underrated strikers of his generation, Vialli transferred from Sampdoria to Juventus for £14.8m in 1992 which is now valued at around £210m which is at number 2 of all time only behind Neymar!
20-Roy Keane: The 'Angry Young Midfielder', Roy Keane transferred from Nottingham Forrest to Manchester United in 1993 for £7.6m which is now inflated to about £118m.
19-Romario: Yet another Brazilian on the list, yet another low fee of just £10.8m to transfer to Barcelona from PSV , and yet another staggering inflation price of £167m.
18-Darko Pancev: Another underrated Striker of his generation, Pancev moved to Inter Milan from Red Star Belgrade for a fee of £11m which is now valued at around £152m.
17-Alen Boksic: Another Serie A transfer, Alen Boksic arrived at Lazio for £9.9m in 1993-94 and is now valued at about £153.1m
16-Rio Ferdinand: The English great moved to Manchester United from Leeds in 2002-03 for a then whopping £41m which is now upto a crazy £159m!
15-David Beckham: Commonly called the 'GOAT' of freekicks, Beckham moved to Real Madrid from Manchester United in 2003-04 for a fee of £33.7m which is now about £144.7m
14-Luis Figo: The Portuguese great made the dreaded switch to Real Madrid from FC Barcelona in 2000-01 fora then fee of £54m which is now valued at around £137.7m.
13-Christian Vieri: Italian attacker Vieri, made the switch from Lazio to Inter Milan for a fee of £41m in 1999-2000 which is now inflated to about £144.3m.
12-Allesandro Nesta: Argubaly the greatest Centre Back of all time, Nesta transferred to AC Milan from Lazio in 2002-03 for a mere £27.8m which is now valued at £107m! Suprisingly(or maybe not) players like Harry Maguire are in todyas world only £20m cheaper than one of the greatest of all time.
11-Nicolas Anelka: The French Striker known to have played for several clubs in his prime made his most expensive move to Real Madrid from Arsenal in 1999 for £31m, now valued at £108.5m.
10-Zinedine Zidane: One of the more expensive transfers on this list during the time of transfer, Zidane shifted to Real Madrid from Juventus, in 2001-02 for £69m now valued at about £157.3m.
09-Dennis Berkgamp: Giving a net inflated value of +£128m, Bergkamp transferred to Inter Milan from Ajax for just £8.8m which is now valued at about £136m!!
08-Andriy Shevchenko: 2004 Balon d' Or winner, Andriy Sheachenko moved to Chelsea for a fee of just £36m considering that he is a Balon d' Or winner. Although he flopped at West London, his value today would be £136.5m after inflation
07-Michael Laudrup: Laudrup, a player commonly remembered to score in a 5-0 win for both Real MAdrid and Barcelona against each other transferred from Camp Nou to Madrid for just £8.8m which is now valued at £122.8m.
06-Fernando Torres: Liverpool and Chelsea great Torres moved to London in 2010-11 for a fee of £52m which is now valued at £145m. Although it was not the best of businesses by Chelsea, we can all agree that the £145m was worth Gary Neville's commentry.
05-Sergio Ramos: Ramos moved from Seville to Real Madrid in 2005-06 for a fee of £24m which is now valued at nearly £95m. He went on to win all trophies for club and country over the next 15 years. Just £15m more than Harry Maguire. Absolutely Crazy!
04-Didier Drogba: Arsenals devil and Chelsea's beloved king, Didier Drogba, arrived at Chelsea in 2004 for a fee of £34m which is now valued at £124m. Pay, Pay and don't speak!
03-Andy Cole: The Englishman moved to Manchester United for a fee of £8.6m in 1994 from Newcastle which is now valued at £122m.
02-Wayne Rooney: Wayne Rooney, one of the greatest ever, arrived at Old Trafford from Everton in the 2004-05 for a fee of £33m which is now valued at nearly £120m.
01-Cristiano Ronaldo: The most expensive transfer on this list at the time of purchase, the legend moved to Real Madrid for £84m in 2009-10 which is now valued at a staggering £195m.
