"The Yo-Yo Club"
On 23rd May 2021, Norwich once again got promoted to the Premier League as Champions of the EFL Championship. But this time to stay in the Premier League they will have to give it their all by signing new players that can play well along with the likes of Todd Cantwell and Teemu Pukki.
They are called the yo-yo club becuase they are a team has consistently been relegated from the premier league everytime they are promoted in the same year.Since the 2014-15 season they have come up 3 times and gone back down that very year. Thus, to improve this some new signings have been made which could change the face of this club especially after the loss of star player Emi Bundeia.
The New Norwich?
The Norwich hierarchy, management and players will obviously want to break this yo-yo chain. But to do so you must have proper squad depth to survive in the PL. The Premier League is the only league to have fixtures even in the winter break (amongst top 5 leagues) which makes it super congested. Along with this schedule they even have to play in the FA Cup and Carabao League Cup.
Now to manage 3 different competitions with trying to get good results is tough unless you have a good squad depth and Norwich is probably just about going in the right direction from their announcements over the past week. They made 3 signings!!!
Milot Rashica:
Probably the best signing made by any bottom tier PL team so far, Norwich has just signed the Kosovo international Attacker from Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga. 24 year old Rashica in top tier football has 42 goals and 43 assists in 201 games which is pretty good considering his age and for a fee of €10 million which is a steal.
Rashica has come in as a replacement for Emi Bundeia who went of to Aston Villa sometime back.
In our opinion Rashica is a class buy for Norwich and should most likely be able to keep them up in the PL.
Agnus Gunn:
A day after the announcement of Rashica, Norwich announced the re-signing of 25 year old English goalkeeper, Agnus Gunn for a fee of €3 million (approx.).
Gunn is a decent goalkeeper and can easily provide support to Krul and add quality squad depth. Signing on a 4 year deal, Norwich may even look to instate him as a crucial part of the team considering his relatively young age.
All in all this is a smart signing which may be decisive for Norwich to stay in the PL, by making Gunn play League Cup games and continue playing Krul in the PL.
Flynn Clarke:
18 year old midfielder Flynn Clarke was announced by Norwich on successive days after Rashica and Gunn. Bought from Peterborough FC for a fee of €500k the young gun has a lot in him considering that a Premier league club has bought him. He isn't much of a PL proven player but could be a great player given some time.
Conclusion:
All in all, these signings could play a crucial role in the development of the yo-yo club in becoming a premier league club. Rashica especially will have expectations to perform in the PL after his exploits for Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga.
Norwich in our opinion should just about escape relegation but finish towards the lower half of the table.
