UCL 2021:Financial Breakdown of the finalists

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEGAUE FINAL-2021

Porto - Manchester City vs Chelsea

With the UEFA Champions League Final less than 2 weeks away;I decided to provide you with a complete financial breakdown about this final in Porto on the 29th,this month.

As always in the UCL this year too has been no exception in having a high voltage final.Thomas Tuchel taking on Pep Guardiola,Eduoard Mendy fighting for the golden glove against Ederson,Mason Mount vs Phil Foden;2 of the biggest talents in English football - take on each other in the final in Portugal. This year we continue with some old rivalries and welcome some new ones at the big stage.

So both Chelsea and Manchester City are known to be the big spenders in the world of football, hence a financial breakdown of both clubs along with some of their top players and a few more things is totally apt to do during this time.

Before we begin with the breakdown, one must know the calculations of earning money in a season of the UCL.

  • Each team that makes the group stage is guaranteed a payment of   15 million.
  • Further each win at any stage of the competition ensures that the club banks a paycheck of approximately €2.7 million and a draw €900k.
  • Teams reaching the quarter finals and semi finals get a further payment of €10.5 million  and €12 million respectively.
  • Finally, the 2 teams that go all the way bag 15 million each and €4 million more on winning the competition.
Hence a team that reaches the finals is guaranteed a minimum of €76 million

Manchester City:

Since the Abu Dhabi born Billionaire ;Sheikh Mansour, took over the reigns of ownership at Man City in 2008 ,they have gone from  strength to strength winning 5 Premiership titles under the sheiks' ownership and becoming one of the most dominating forces in world football. The only thing that they have been deprived of is the Champions League.
The Club under the cash rich owner has spent close to            1.5 billion dollars since the sheikhs takeover in  2008 and have a net spend of about -1.2billion dollars making it the club with the worst net income.

The club spent approximately €160m over the summer of 2020 to sign 7 market recognised players.Star signing Ruben Dias(60m),former Valencia winger Ferran Torres(23) and Nathan Ake(45) were some of the big name signings.
Barring the former Chelsea man;Ake, both the other big signings have proved their worth in the UCL and PL,with Dias being a contender to win the PFA POTY award.

With the number of signings, quality of the same and excellent personnel management Pep Guardiola's Manchester City won their 6th Prem title and a 4th consecutive League Cup title this season and our also now considered the favorites to win the UCL.

Chelsea FC:

The turn of the millennium saw a new dominant power enter the world of football in the form of Chelsea FC which was bought by Russian billionaire  Roman Abramovich in 2003 for an amount of $233 million. This investment of $233 million made the from a mid table club to a title winning outfit.
Since this massive takeover the club has like Man City won 5 Premiership titles and also the 1 UCL in 2012.The glory thirsty owner has never allowed sentiments to play in  the managing of a club and has thus obtained a reputation for sacking managers frequently to challenge for titles.
Financially, in our opinion Chelsea under Abramovich has become one of the best run clubs in the world.Since his takeover in 2003 the club has spent about £1.58 billion recoverd £876million making its net amount spent a little over -£704million.

Over the summer of 2020 Roman Abramovich went on a shopping spree despite the Covid-19 pandemic hitting world. He made 7 registered signings which made the club and its fans look forward to an exciting season. He signed German wonderkid Kai Havertz(£72m),former Ajax fan favourite Hakim Ziyech(£33m),RB Leipzigs goalscoring machine Timo Werner(£50m),English full back Ben Chilwell(£50m),Brazillian legned Thiago Silva(free),Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy(£23m) and Malang Sarr(sent on loan to Porto).

All these signings got of to a great start initially going on a 17 game unbeaten run until December. After Thomas Tuchel took over the managerial reigns of the club from Frank Lampard in January the club has become one of the most formidable opponents in the world.

With all things coming together for Tuchel's Blues barring a few defeats Chelsea could very well win the UCL for a second time on its history.

Odds:

Man City :

 4/9

Chelsea :

7/4

At the end all one can say is that this is going to be a very very very high intensity game with Chelsea having beaten City thrice already this season. However, football like most sports is a very thrilling game in the sense there are no favorites,on a given day anyone could beat any team and that is what a fan enjoys.
