The Neymar Effect

THE NEYMAR EFFECT

"ANALYSING THE FINANCIAL IMPACT OF NEYMAR RE-SIGNING WITH PSG AND THE INFLATION HIS MOVE HAD ON THE TRANSFER MARKET SINCE SIGNING FOR PSG."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A short while back, the Brazilian international Neymar, once again created a buzz in the transfer market when he decided to re-sign his contract with Paris Saint Germain until 2025.
In this article we will be looking at 2 aspects this move has had financially;first, the details of this particular contract and it's implications to other clubs wanting him, secondly the effect his transfer had on world football since his move in 2017

Mission 2021-2025 -

Since coming to the Parc de Princes in 2017 for a whopping fee of 222 million,Neymar has guided PSG  to three league titles, two Coupe de France, and two Coupe de la Ligue, which included a domestic treble and being voted Ligue 1 Player of the Year in his debut season. He also guided PSG to their maiden UCL final.

Although his main 'task' at PSG was to win the UCL and bring it to Paris-which he failed to do-he has yet had a pretty good time on the pitch which has made the Paris hierarchy ignore rumored offers for their star winger and re-sign him till 2025.

His new contract is without doubt one of the most lucrative contracts offered to a player ever, making him the 3rd highest paid player at the moment(per week);earning approximately 30 million.

According to Fabrizio Romano one of the most trusted football journalists',Neymar's contract details are:

  • He will sign a deal which is 4 year long starting 2021 upto 2025.
  • Neymar's salary will be around €30m after taxes for 5 years.
  • He will earn 'huge bonuses' from the club in the case of PSG winning the UCL with Neymar in the team during the duration of his contract.
  • The Brazilian winger had no release clause in his previous contract and once again there is no indication of a release clause being put in the contract.

On signing the contract Neymar made a statement saying;
"I'm very happy, very happy to be extending my contract with Paris until 2025"
"The truth is that I'm very happy to be staying here for four more years, to be a part of the club's project, to try and win titles, to try and achieve our biggest dream which is the Champions League."

This move by Neymar means that clubs like FC Barcelona who were heavily linked to buy him back to replace the misfiring Ousmane Dembele since Joana Laporta was reappointed as President, must continue their search for a competent winger.

THE INFLATED MARKET-

Neymar's transfer to PSG in the summer of 2017 for a record breaking 222 million absolutely shook the footballing world.Though it happened 4 years ago, we are including this in our article as its 'aftershocks',are still being felt in the transfer market and are not going to die;ever!

Before this huge transfer top players, global superstars and cult hero's were never sold for fees as high as 80-90 million let alone 222million.We have compiled a short table of players being sold over 70 million before this transfer of Neymar.
Result....There are only 7!Just7 in the history of football.

As one would have noticed all the names in the given table are only of those who were the biggest and the best superstars or prospects in their time. Also, all of them barring Rodriguez(to a certain extent) have earned their name as some of the worlds greatest and perhaps even in history.

Now,since the Neymar transfer there have been 24 transfers over the  70m mark which is showing the change in the style of approach of clubs. Here is a table of the 7 most expensive transfers since the transfer of Neymar.

In this second table we can see that all transfers are over 100m which is clear evidence of the effect the Neymar has had over the world of football.Average players are sold for way more than they are valued;Harry Maguire(80m),Kepa Arrizabalaga(72m),Lucas Hernandez(70m),etc.Most of these players have been either flops for their teams or have not been able to justify their price tag.
Also all of these players proved themselves at lower levels or at their former clubs but failed to replicate that form in their new club;obviously due to the dagger of price tag hanging on their heads at all times.

At the end of the article, in our opinion 'The Neymar Effect',as we call it, has had a horrible impact on world football.Average players get sold very high, top stars get nervous due to the new expectations due to which very few survive and the Academy of a lot of clubs starts getting neglected.

The whole market turns into a sellers market and small clubs find it hard to thrive with their best players getting sold for millions.

At the same time keeping in mind his re-signing, it will be interesting to watch if he manages to accomplish his main aim at PSG-to win the UCL
